Stevenson and Hendrix each reached milestones in the history of their relatively young programs on Saturday, as Stevenson improved to 4-0 for the first time ever and Hendrix improved to 3-0 for the first time in 85 years.
Stevenson threw for just 39 yards, and half of Trey Lee's 120 yards came on one long breakaway, but the Mustangs had a dominant day defensively as they defeated Albright 13-6. Stevenson intercepted a pass in the end zone as time expired to avoid a Hail Mary attempt to tie the game. Stevenson is in the fourth year of its football program.
For Hendrix, Seth Peters threw for 451 yards and Dayton Winn ran for 115 as the Warriors defeated Birmingham-Southern 48-31. Winn was 36-for-44 passing, while Winn ran for four touchdowns. It's just the second season since Hendrix brought football back after an absence of more than 50 years.
Ursinus scored the first 35 points of the game on its way to a 42-13 win over McDaniel on Saturday, marking the second straight season that the Bears have started 4-0.
Mitch Hendricks had a career day for Gustavus Adolphus, setting a personal high for passing yards for the second consecutive week by throwing for 504 yards and seven touchdowns in a 55-31 win at Augsburg. Hendricks was 33-for-39, 23 of them to Matt and Gabriel Boyce, as Matt had 12 catches for 178 yards and three TDs and Gabriel added 11 for 154 and two scores.
St. Norbert held Michael Bates to 22-for-40 passing and 218 yards as the Green Knights rallied to defeat Illinois College 32-27. Zach Broberg ended a comeback from a 27-6 deficit and capped an 11-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, his second TD of the fourth quarter.
Michael Lahey and Chapman won the battle of the offenses as the Panthers' quarterback compiled 400 yards of total offense (302 passing, 92 rushing) in a 49-34 win vs. Whitworth. Bryan Peterson, who threw for nearly 600 yards for the Pirates last week, was 37-for-59 but threw for just 280 yards and was picked off twice.
Trinity (Conn.) handed Williams a 38-0 loss, tying for the most lopsided Bantam win in the 73-game history of the series. It's the fourth consecutive win for Trinity vs. Williams and is the Ephs' first loss in their new home (of all of two games).
In a two-minute span, Zack Trause scored on an 82-yard kickoff return and a 49-yard punt return to help Tufts, fresh off snapping a 31-game losing streak, start a new streak. With a 42-24 win against Bates, which led 17-7 early, the Jumbos are 2-0.
Rich Pete rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns and Buffalo State (3-1, 1-1 Empire 8) erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat visiting Salisbury (1-2, 0-1), 32-28. Pete has been over 100 yards in each of the Bengals' four games this season.
Utica also joined the ranks of surprise 4-0 teams, with a balanced effort in a 42-28 win against Brockport State. The Pioneers passed for 247 yards, led by Anthony Acevedo's 12 catches for 199 yards, and ran for 225 in the Empire 8 victory.
Beloit rallied from a 10-point mid-fourth-quarter deficit to beat Lake Forest, 27-24. Kam Sallee kicked a 37-yard field goal with 59 seconds left to tie it, and hit the game-winner in overtime from 34. The Foresters had five turnovers, including four interceptions, but Bucs running back Mason Dixon had 30 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Methodist quarterback Max Reber passed for 480 yards and six touchdowns, but Christopher Newport counterpart Marcus Morrast stole the show in the Captains' 51-48 double overtime win. Morrast threw a game-tying touchdown pass in the waning minutes and ran it in from 25 yards out on the first play of CNU's second overtime possesion, with his team down three.
Austin's Shane Hodge blocked a 45-yard Howard Payne field goal attempt as time ran out to preserve a 19-16 road win. The Roos had just 221 yards of offense, but Delmas Hoye had two of Austin's three second-half intereceptions of Ricardo Young.
Defiance trailed by 12 in the fourth quarter but rallied past Hanover, 31-28, for its first win.
Springfield scored 36 points in the second quarter and outrushed Rochester 532-62 in a 63-27 victory.
