Anna Maria has named Dan Mulrooney as head football coach. The hiring was announced by athletic director Serge DeBari. Mulrooney joins the Anna Maria community following three years serving as the defensive coordinator at nearby WPI.
Mulrooney replaces Vincent Sinagra, who was 6-44 in his five seasons at the helm of the AMCATs. Anna Maria has won eight games in eight seasons of intercollegiate football.
Over his three years coordinating the defense at WPI the team has grown immensely. Their defense became one of the top defenses in the Liberty League and in 2015 WPI had its best season in 23 years. In 2016, WPI reached new heights by having its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1995. They participated in an ECAC bowl game for the third time.
Mulrooney looks to bring a "new culture" to the Anna Maria football program as he has done for WPI. "I am an enthusiastic, dedicated, hardworking coach who strives to develop student-athletes to reach their maximum potential ... The team will only be as good as the culture that is created since Day One."
"He is a hardworking football coach with a great attitude looking for an opportunity to develop high character student-athletes on an off the field" said DeBari. "I believe Mulrooney has a great deal of experience and knowledge to bring to the football program; I look forward to working with him in developing and growing the Anna Maria College football team."
Mulrooney attended Boston College for his undergraduate degree and was on a full football scholarship. Mulrooney played safety at Boston College and was a part of two ACC championship games. After graduating from Boston College in 2011, He finished his playing career with a two-year stint at Stony Brook. He was the Seawolves leader in tackles in 2011 and was named team defensive newcomer of the year. At Stony Brook he won two Big South titles and helped lead the team to multiple NCAA playoff berths. He was a standout player at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Conn., where he was all-state twice and won a pair of state championships.
Mulrooney earned a communication degree from Boston College and a master's in liberal arts from Stony Brook.
