Belhaven football coach Hal Mumme has resigned in order to pursue other coaching opportunities. Mumme led the Blazers through four seasons with a conference record of 3-23 and an overall record of 8-33. Belhaven won two games in each of his four seasons.
"Hal assumed a challenging coaching assignment, helping us move from NAIA to NCAA Division III, and led the team through these transition years when we were not yet eligible to compete for Division III championships. He built a dynamic offense based on the AirRaid model, and set many passing records that made the games fun to watch," said Belhaven president Roger Parrott. "I'm especially proud of our student-athletes who rose to the occasion during this time of NCAA transition, and played their hearts out to put so many points on the scoreboard."
Beginning in fall 2019, at the conclusion of the NCAA mandatory 4-year provisional membership period, Belhaven is expected to become eligible to compete for conference and national championships in all sports.
Mumme had previously been head coach at McMurry. He is 143-152-1 across seven career head coaching stops.
"I'm stepping down as head football coach at Belhaven to pursue jobs at a higher level," said Mumme. "At this point in my career I would like to just coach AirRaid offense. Building a stadium and administering a program has been fun at BU but my heart is elsewhere now. In fairness to all involved, I think it best to announce my intentions. I would like to thank the staff, players and parents who have made my life so very good at BU. Jaclyn and I will miss you. Thanks also to the administration, staff, faculty and boosters at Belhaven for all your support - we wish you the best."
