Jacob Stanley came up with an interception at the Hobart 2-yard line with 15 seconds left, while John Carroll survived two attempts at a game-winning field goal at Wheaton, Wartburg and St. John's battled down to the wire and Linfield and UMHB went back-and-forth in 2014 Division III football playoff second-round action.
Linfield defeated No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor 31-28, harrassing Zach Anderson into 9-for-24 passing for just 106 yards. The Wildcats held Mary Hardin-Baylor off the scoreboard in the final quarter to secure the victory. Malcolm Miller had eight carries for 97 yards for UMHB, but 74 of them came on one touchdown run. Sam Riddle scored a touchdown on the ground and threw for a pair for the Wildcats. UMHB is winless in three meetings with Linfield, losing in Salem, McMinnville and now Belton.
Hobart reached the national quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons as the Statesmen held off Johns Hopkins 24-21 in a battle of unbeatens in Geneva, N.Y. After the Blue Jays fumbled on the Hobart 12-yard line, Patrick Conlan hit receiver John Fasano with a touchdown pass, capping an 88-yard drive with the go-ahead score with under two minutes to go. A two-point conversion pass made it a three-point game.
Johns Hopkins drove back into Hobart territory in the closing minute and appeared to have scored the go-ahead touchdown but had it called back because of a penalty and Anderson was picked off on the ensuing series. Conlan finished 19-for-30 passing for 237 yards in the win.
Wheaton had a field goal blocked in the final minute, then missed wide left after an offsides penalty on John Carroll and JCU defeated the Thunder 14-12. Tommy Michals ran for 81 yards and a touchdown and had six catches for 34 yards in the win. The Blue Streaks had been averaging 53 points per game entering the contest.
Anthony Davis had 13 catches for 146 yards, including a big 46-yard reception to set up a touchdown, and Widener scored on a 98-yard drive to take a 21-10 lead into the half en route to a 37-27 win in Chester, Pa. The Pride needed just 24:25 to run 70 plays and score their 37 points. Seth Klein was 21-of-29 passing for 268 yards and two touchdowns, and the Pride defense added three sacks of Marcus Morrast.
Widener extended its lead to 24 points early in the fourth quarter, but Christopher Newport scored two touchdowns and recovered an onside kick to make it an interesting finish. Rudy Rudolph finished with eight catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns for the Captains, who finish 8-4 and head to the NJAC next season.
Defending national champion UW-Whitewater connected on a field goal in the final minutes of the first half to take a 10-7 lead and pulled away in the second half as the Warhawks defeated Wabash 38-14. Jake Kumerow made his return for the Warhawks and had three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. UWW will host Wartburg, which defeated St. John's 21-10. Logan Schrader and Brandon Domeyer ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown apiece for the Knights, who improved to 12-0.
Wesley had little trouble for the second consecutive week, putting up 35 points in the first quarter en route to a 59-0 win vs. MIT. Joe Callahan was 21-for-26 passing for 268 yards and four touchdowns for the Wolverines, who play host to Hobart next week in the national quarterfinals. The Wolverines scored three times in 88 seconds, as Bryce Shade capped a 70-yard drive with a touchdown run, Leroy Cheatham returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown and Andre Connally returned a blocked punt 35 yards for a score.
Mount Union rolled up 703 yards of total offense and cruised into the national quarterfinals for the 23rd consecutive season, defeating Washington and Jefferson 67-0. Kevin Burke was 30-for-41 passing for 402 yards and six touchdowns, with Luc Meacham and Roman Namdar each going over 100 yards receiving.
