STEVENS POINT (October 8, 2011) - UW-Stout scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to come from behind to take a 22-19 win over UW-Stevens Point to snap a two game losing streak.
#Ross Carey (Sr, Little Suamico) tossed a 72 yard strike off a flea-flicker to Josh Peterson (Jr, Cedar Grove) to open the fourth quarter to pull to within 17-16. Then, with time winding down, Carey connected with Jordan Peterson (Sr, Cedar Grove) for 31 yards to the Point 22 and Eric Brown (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) carried three times, the final time 13 yards for the go-ahead score. The two-point conversion failed, and Stout led 22-17.
But the Pointers (2-3, 0-2), behind back-up quarterback Mitch Beau, drove to with striking distance. Stout linebacker Trevor Fiege (Sr, Menomonie) saw a near interception fall off his hands, cornerback Billy Rosenthal (Jr, Wyoming, Minn) broke up what appeared to be a sure TD in the end zone and Jason Brenner (Sr, Menomonie) picked off a pass on the 4-yard line with 44 seconds remaining.
The Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1) ran out the clock, literally. Stevens Point used its time outs, and with one second left on fourth down, Carey ran out of the back of the end zone to protect the ball and take the safety.
The game didn't start out so well for the Blue Devils. On Stout's first drive, Carey was intercepted by Curtis Krump, who returned the ball to the Stout 30. Two plays later, Cory Flisakowski carried the ball in from the 15 and the Pointers led. The Pointers added a 42-yard field goal from Jared Fohrman with two minutes left in the quarter and the Pointers held a 10-0 lead.
Stout did manage to move the ball and pulled to within 10-6 by halftime on two Ricky Marteney (So, Greenfield) field goals. Marteney added another field goal in the third quarter to move Stout to within a point, 10-9.
But behind Beau, Stevens Point pulled out to a 17-9 lead when the youngster connected on a 30-yard pass play to Marc Young seconds into the fourth quarter.
That's when Carey and company got to work to pull the game out. Until Stevens Point's final drive of the game, the Pointers would get no closer than their own 41 yard line.
Carey finished the day completing 19-of-37 yards for 284 yards, with one TD, but was intercepted twice. Josh Peterson had a career-day, hauling in five passes for 110 yards, the 72-yarder a career-long. Mike Gervanek (Jr, Baxter, Minn) also had a career-day, hauling in five passes for 78 yards, including a 40-yard pass in the third quarter. Jordan Peterson had a pair of catches for 41 yards, with a long of 31 yards.
Paul Bernier (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) led all rushers with a career-high 96 yards on 17 carries, including a 53-yarder in the third quarter.
For the Pointers, Beau completed 6-of-9 passes for 73 yards. Marc Young had six receptions for 78 yards. Beau finished with 65 yards rushing, while Flisakowski had 66 yards.
Stout tallied 463 yards of total offense, 179 on the ground, 284 in the air. The Pointers collected 245 yards of offense, 142 rushing, 103 yards passing.
Defensively, Stout's Aaron Kobes (Sr, Two Rivers) and Jake Johnson (Jr, Champlin, Minn) each had a sack.
Stout will be at NCAA Division III defending national champion UW-Whitewater, Friday, Oct. 14 for a 7 p.m. game.
