NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A second successive week of strong results through the air from junior quarterback Logan Haston (Avon, Ind.) to assist in lighting up the home side of the scoreboard at Carl W. Burt Memorial Field wasn't enough for the home-standing Manchester University Spartans Saturday, Sept. 13.
Haston was on fire in the pocket for the Black and Gold hitting on 25 of 39 attempts for 254 yards and three touchdowns in front of an appreciative crowd of better than 2,000 fans. His favorite targets came in the form of sophomore Dakota Nelson (Fairland, Ind.) and junior Evan Rice (Gosport, Ind.) at the wide receiver slots, as they combined for 13 catches.
However, the visiting Buffalo State Bengals, showing off a vaunted offense that put 51 points up in their home and season opener against traditionally-strong Cortland State a week prior, kept the momentum going. They piled up 609 yards, of which 336 came on the ground, to pave the way to a 60-32 win. A 21-0 first quarter roll got the visitors started before MU managed to whittle the deficit to within two scores in the second half.
The Spartans' defensive numbers were led by the backfield. The trio of sophomore Nathan Birk (Indianapolis, Ind.), senior Wade Teltoe (Edinburgh, Ind.) and junior Taylor Anglemeyer (Wakarusa, Ind.) wound up one-through-three on the tackle charts. Birk also added an interception to his totals.
The Black and Gold take their 1-1 overall record into the 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener against Earlham at Burt Field Saturday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
NOTES: Haston's back-to-back 240-yard-plus passing efforts marked the first such set for a Black and Gold signal caller since former standout Caleb Grimes did so in the final two games of 2009 … The team's 71 points over the first two weeks are the most in a similar span for MU's program since the 2012 squad posted 70-or-more two-game totals twice during their season-ending six-game win string.
