#4 Wesley Stymies Rowan in 37-7 Victory

More news about: Wesley

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's fourth-ranked football team's defense allowed just 106 total yards as the Wolverines (3-0) defeated Rowan, 37-7, on Saturday afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium.  The victory was Wesley's first-ever in eight meetings over the Profs as Rowan falls to 1-2 on the season.

The Wolverines defense, who did not allow a first down until 6:36 left in the third quarter were only on the field for 41 plays as the offense consumed over 36 minutes of clock. Sosthene Kapepula led Wesley with five tackles, all of which came in the first half while Leon Jones, Payton Rose and Zane Campbell had four apiece.  Two of Rose's stops went for a loss.

Quarterback Joe Callahan had another big game for the Wolverines, completing 30-of-43 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns while hitting ten different receivers.  Callahan's most frequent target was Steve Koudossou who hauled in eight passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.  Tory Robinson and Xavier Allen also found the end zone on passing plays.

Jamar Baynard tallied 144 all-purpose yards to lead Wesley, carrying the ball 23 times for 87 and a score while also catching five passes for 57 yards. The Navy & White totaled 486 yards of offense on the day.

Wesley scored the game's first 31 points and got the scoring started midway through the first quarter on a one-yard run by Baynard.  The Wolverines forced a three-and-out and started on a 14 play drive that went just 32 yards but ate 4:36 of playing time.  The drive stalled and Wesley was forced to punt but De'Vaughn Trader recovered the muffed punt and three plays later Baynard crossed the goal line.

Kapepula helped force two more Rowan three-and-outs in the first quarter and Wesley scored again early in the second on a 32-yard strike from Callahan to Koudossou. Rowan had another two three-and-outs before Robinson caught his first career touchdown pass from Callahan that went for 29 yards to make the score 18-0 with 3:32 left in the first half.

Brandon Wright scored on a one-yard run on Wesley's opening drive of the second half that went 12 plays for 63 yards which took up 5:39 of playing time.  Liam Dolly converted on the extra point and following Rowan's seventh-straight three-and-out, Callahan hit Allen on a 14-yard post pattern to give Wesley a 31-0 lead.

Rowan finally recorded a first down on its next drive and found the end zone after a pass interference call gave it the ball on the Wesley two-yard line.  Withler Marcelin carried the ball in on the next play but the Wesley defense stymied him throughout the day, going for just 25 yards on 12 carries.

The Profs were able to tally 73 yards through the air as Bill McCarty completed 8-of-17 passes.

Wesley added a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter, one a 19-yard attempt by Dolly and a 40-yard boot from Brent Adams to cap off the scoring.

The Wolverines will look to win their fourth-straight game when they host Southern Virginia on Saturday, September 27 in a 1 pm kickoff.
