SHERMAN, Texas — Oxy had no problem moving the ball, but the Tigers couldn't convert long drives into touchdowns and had three costly turnovers in the second half of a loss to the Roos on Saturday.
Turning Point: On 4th and 3 with a 12-7 lead midway through the third quarter, Oxy running back Kwame Do's first down run was called back due to holding and the Tigers were forced to punt.
On Austin's next drive, Madison Ross broke an 83-yard touchdown run, swinging the momentum and the lead to Austin College for good.
The Tigers' next three drives ended in interceptions and the Roos opened up their lead.
Players of the Game: Samuel Crizer had nine catches for 103 yards and Do had 153 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.
Defensive Standouts: Teran Mawhinney and Chaz Shizumura each led the Tigers with nine tackles and Dallas Gosselin and Adam Goltche each had eight.
Play of the Game: Do broke loose for a 61-yard run in the second quarter, taking the ball inside the 10-yard line and setting up a two-yard touchdown run for himself a play later.
Devin Dallas Homecoming: Sherman, Texas is about an hour north of Dallas, Texas, the hometown of Oxy wide receiver Devin Bullock and linebacker Devin Chapman.
Chapman finished the game with six tackles and a pick. Bullock had four catches for 58 yards.
Going for it on 4th Down: The name of the game in the first half was which team was going to be more successful on 4th and short. Oxy ended two Austin College drives by keeping the Roos from the first down marker and the Roos kept Oxy from opening up a two-score lead as time expired in the first half by blocking a field goal attempt by Max Gruber. The Roos recovered the kick and returned it to the 50 yard line before Gruber made a horse collar tackle to save a touchdown. On the ensuing untimed down after the 15-yard penalty, Chapman intercepted a Hail Mary in Oxy's end zone, sending the Tigers into the locker room up 9-7.
Season Impact: Oxy misses an opportunity to head into SCIAC play undefeated, falling to 1-1 on the season. But with star wide receiver Samuel Stekol returning, the Tigers will have plenty of weapons to be a contender in the SCIAC.
Next Game: The Tigers have a bye week to get healthy and then open up SCIAC play at La Verne on Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
