FROSTBURG, Md. – Buffalo State scored a pair of second half touchdowns and used a late fourth-down fourth-quarter stop to seal a 31-14 victory over Frostburg State, Saturday.
The Bobcats (2-3, 0-3 E8) held the ball for over 35 minutes but couldn't find the end zone in the second half to close the gap on the visiting Bengals (4-1, 2-1 E8), who extended a 17-7 halftime lead to 31-14 with just over five minutes to go in the ballgame.
Frostburg had one final opportunity to narrow the deficit and seize momentum late in the game. Senior punter Zach Tuckmantel buried the Bengals at their own four yard line with 11:20 showing in the fourth. After three plays that resulted in just two yards, Buffalo State punter Joe Going booted an 11 yard punt that setup Frostburg at the 17. A pass interference call in the end zone handed FSU first and goal at the BSC two yard line. However, after three plays, Frostburg faced fourth and goal from the one and the Bengals stuffed a fake field goal to keep their lead at 24-14.
BSC sealed the win by marching 97 yards on four plays to increase its lead to 31-14 after Tre Jones scored on a 28-yard run.
Buffalo State finished with 434 yards in offense behind Kyle Hoppy's 225 passing yards (7-of-15). He tossed a 92-yard touchdown in the first quarter and a 43 yarder in the third, while Rich Pete carried the ball 18 times for 121 yards and BSC's first touchdown.
Bobcat senior quarterback Ken Emmons scored the game's first touchdown with a three-yard scamper in the first quarter that gave the hosts a 7-0 lead. Sophomore tailback Marcus Smith highlighted the drive with a 64 yard run up the home sideline before being carried out of bounds at the Buffalo State one. Three plays later, Emmons scored and sophomore Isaac Robinson converted the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
Buffalo State answered with three scores on their next three possessions. Pete scored from 48 yards out, Hoppy found Ryan Carney for a 92 yard touchdown toss and Mark Montana kicked an 18 yard field goal as the visitors grabbed a 17-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Frostburg mounted its second longest drive of the ballgame, six plays 50 yards, midway through the second quarter that narrowed the score to 17-14. Senior running back Ben Sasu carried the ball three times for 25 yards, including a 13 yard scoring run with 6:03 left in the first half.
In the third quarter, Hoppy tossed a 43 yard touchdown pass to Billy Joiner and Jones' 28 yard run with 5:19 left in the fourth sealed the victory.
Emmons threw for 117 yards and ran for another 20, including a touchdown. Smith led Frostburg with 79 yards on 16 carries, while Sasu finished with 63 yards on 16 carries. Sophomore Aaron Turner caught three passes for 36 yards.
Senior Keith Smith led the Bobcat defense with 10 tackles, while junior Rowan Pinkett added nine. Sophomore William Sewell posted 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
Frostburg travels to Brockport next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
