ATHERTON, Calif. – Wesley College's 4th-ranked football team totaled 661 yards of offense, including 265 on the ground, en route to a 70-2 victory at Menlo College on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines improve to 7-0 while the Oaks fall to 2-5 on the season.
Joe Callahan passed for four touchdowns, all in the first half, and finished 23-of-30 for 355 yards before giving way to Zach Smith in the third quarter. While the run game went wild in the second half behind Ben Martin's career-high 194 yards and three scores on just five carries, Smith also completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Matt Bundy in the third quarter.
On the receiving end, Steve Koudossou had a team-high 95 receiving yards while five different players caught touchdown passes, including Jamar Baynard (4 rec., 81 yds) and Kyle George (5 rec., 80 yds). Bryce Shade and Xavier Allen also found the end zone on passing plays for Wesley.
The Wolverines scored touchdowns on its first two possessions with its first capping off an 11 play, 68 yard drive that ate up nearly three minutes. Resulting in a 23-yard touchdown pass to George, Callahan was on target on 6-of-8 passes for 57 yards.
Jordan Wescott, who also had a game-high nine tackles, intercepted a pass on Menlo's ensuing possession and returned it back 18 yards to the Oaks' 32-yardline. Following passes to Baynard and George, Baynard crossed the goal line from nine yards out, giving Wesley a 14-0 lead with 8:40 left in the opening quarter.
Menlo and Wesley then traded punts but following another Oaks three-and-out, Callahan led another touchdown scoring drive, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown pass to Allen.
For the fourth and final time in the first quarter, Menlo went three-and-out and five plays later, Callahan hit Shade from 13 yards out, increasing the Wolverines lead to 28 points with 14:43 left in the half. Wesley scored another touchdown before the half on a 59-yard catch and run from Callahan to Baynard and the Wolverines led 35-0 at the half.
Kennard Squirrell scored from one yard out on the opening drive of the second half to give Wesley a 42-0 lead before Martin took over the game. Martin took his first handoff of the game from Smith and ran 68 yards for a touchdown. Martin later scored on runs of 30 yards and 69 yards late in the fourth quarter.
Menlo's lone points came on a safety with 12:07 left in the fourth quarter on a failed punt attempt by the Wolverines, cutting the Navy & White's advantage to 49-2.
Wesley's defense did allow 330 yards of offense but five takeaways prevented the Oaks from scoring, including four interceptions. Aside from Wescott's pick in the opening quarter, Ben Robinson, Derrick Bender and Leon Jones also recorded interceptions. Jones now has 13 interceptions in his career, tying him with Marcus Wilson for fifth on Wesley's all-time list.
Sean Hopkins also forced and recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter, just prior to Martin's 30-yard touchdown scamper.
For Menlo, Josh Neal threw for 195 yards but completed just 21-of-45 passes and threw three interceptions. Nate Dodson threw the other pick and completed just one of his four passes for one yard.
Jake Fohn led the Oaks in both rushing and receiving with 73 yards on 19 carries on the ground, along with six catches for 42 yards.
The Wolverines are back on the road next Saturday, October 25 when they face Virginia University of Lynchburg in a 1 pm kickoff.
