Buena Vista Football Wins Offensive Shootout with Luther, 48-41

More news about: Buena Vista

Senior quarterback Bobby Brown threw for 253 yards and four scores, while senior tailback Dylan Barrett rushed for a career-best 264 yards and two touchdowns, and the duo helped lift the Buena Vista football team to a thrilling 48-41 triumph over visiting Luther College on Saturday afternoon.

Barrett set new career highs in both rushing attempts (42) and yards (264), while his total was also the fourth-best single-game performance in school history - falling just four yards shy of Zach Mathers' 268 yards against Cornell College in 1998.  His 42 carries were just four shy of Ben Smith's single-game record of 46 set back in 1996 against Central College.

He found the end-zone on two of his carries, giving BVU a 21-13 lead at the 12:41 mark of the second quarter before his fourth-quarter plunger on third-and-goal from the Luther one yard-line, extended the lead to 42-27 with exactly 11:00 to play.

Luther scored on the game's first play from scrimmage, getting an 80-yard touchdown pass up the far sideline, but had its extra-point attempt blocked and settled for a 6-0 lead.  The Beavers, however, came right back on their first drive of the game, capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Brown to fellow senior Gunner Gilland with 10:36 left in the opening quarter.  Tyler Stolen's PAT was good, putting BVU out in front at 7-6.

The Norse, though, had an answer of their own, as they came right back three plays later with a 70-yard touchdown run from Josh Vos, and the extra-point was good, giving Luther the 13-7 edge.

Not to be outdone, BVU again marched right back down the field on its next possession, going 76 yards in just eight plays, capped by a five-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the field from Brown to junior Ben Seitz.  Stolen's PAT made it 14-13 in favor of the blue and gold.

The Beaver defense then had an answer for Luther on its next drive, taking advantage of a false start by the Norse and then getting a big nine-yard sack by Matt Schmidt on 3rd-and-12, forcing a Luther punt.

BVU took advantage on the ensuing drive, going 62 yards in 10 plays with Barrett scoring the first of his two touchdowns.

Luther again came up short on its next possession, turning it over on downs after an incomplete pass on 4th-and-4 from the BVU 37 yard-line.

After the Beavers marched down inside the Luther 35, Brown was intercepted on a spectacular grab by Aric Elton at the Luther 24.

The Beaver defense came up big yet again, holding the Norse to just one first down before stuffing them on 4th-and-2 when the Norse tried a fake punt from their own 43 yard-line.

Two plays later, Brown hooked up with Gilland on a 43-yard strike, giving BVU its largest lead of the game at 28-13 with just under 2:00 to go in the first half.

BVU's defense forced another Norse punt attempt on the next drive and took the 15-point lead into halftime.

After Luther chose to recieve the ball to start the game, BVU got the ball to start the second half, but was forced to punt for the first time in the contest.  Luther got the ball back at its own 33 and went 67 yards in just six plays, capped by a 40-yard touchdown run with just over three minutes gone by in the half.

BVU again had an answer, going 79 yards in 11 plays, capping a 4:35 drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brown to senior Adam Cave with 8:47 left in the third.

The two teams then traded punts, sending the game into the fourth period before Luther scored just two plays into the final frame, getting a 24-yard touchdown run after a 52-yard burst to start the quarter.

Barrett then took the game over, carrying the ball six times on BVU's next drive, capping the eight-play 72-yard drive with his one-yard plunge to make it a 42-27 contest with right at 11:00 to play.  On the drive, Barrett had runs of 21 yards and 37 yards to set up the score.

After Luther went 71 yards in eight plays to pull back within 42-34 with 7:42 left, BVU then got back-to-back field goals from Stolen to push the margin to 48-34 with 2:26 left.

The Norse weren't about to go away, as they marched 61 yards in nine plays and took only 1:34 off the clock to make it a 48-41 contest with 43 ticks left.

Seitz, however, recovered the on-side kick attempt by Luther, to secure the win for BVU - its seventh straight Iowa Conference victory dating back to last season.

Brown finished the game completing 19-of-25 attempts, and with his second completion set the program's all-time completion record, surpassing Chris Hawkins' previous record of 471.  His four touchdown passes also moved him into first on the career list, moving him past BVU Hall of Famer Rollie Wiebers, who had held the previous mark of 49 since 1978.

Brown now has 19 touchdown passes this season and 53 in his career and is within one of matching Rick Wulkow's single-season mark of 20 set back in 1966.

Gilland finished with a game-best seven catches for 116 yards and the two scores, and he moves within 10 receptions of matching Josh Espinosa's single-season record of 60 receptions, set in 2002.

Cave followed with six grabs for 72 yards, as Seitz added five for 51.

Aside from his field goals of 32 and 30 yards, respectively, Stolen also averaged 45.5 yards on two punts, including a long of 55 yards that came to rest inside of the Luther 10.

Beau Van Wechel chalked up 12 tackles to help lead the way defensively for BVU, with Derek Schwartz and Brady Billerbeck right behind with nine.

Luther quarterback JJ Sirios rushed 22 times for 145 yards and three scores, while Vos finished with 113 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns.  Sirios also completed 5-of-9 attempts through the air for 120 yards.

Buena Vista improves to 4-2 overall (3-0 IIAC) and looks to keep the winning streak intact when it goes back on the road to the University of Dubuque next Saturday for a 1:00 pm kick-off.  The Spartans are coming off a tough 42-9 loss at sixth-ranked Wartburg College later this afternoon.
