Warriors, Winn Rush for Records Vs. Majors

More news about: Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College football team rushed for a school record 328 yards with junior Dayton Winn providing 226, also a record, on the ground as Hendrix opened Southern Athletic Association play with a 45-34 victory over Millsaps College at home Saturday.

Winn, from Pea Ridge, Ark., rushed 22 times for a 10.3 yard per carry average and found the endzone four times. Junior quarterback Seth Peters had 70 yards on the ground on 15 carries and sophomore Mike Goodrich added 25 yards.

After a scorless first quarter, the Warriors (2-1, 1-0) opened the second with a seven-play, 82-yard drive capped by a 26-yard pass from Peters to sophomore Ben Luedtke. The Majors (1-3, 0-1) responded with seven-yard scoring run by quarterback Ty Proctor, who then hit Rashad Sims for a two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead.

On the next possession, Hendrix drove 70 yards which resulted in Winn scoring from one yard out. Millsaps tied the game after 49-yard pass from Proctor to Zach Borne set up a six-yard run by tailback Taz Watson. The ensuing conversion failed, making the game 14-14, which stood until halftime.

In the first drive of the second half, Winn found an opening for a 38-yard touchdown run. The Majors went three and out on the next drive and the Warriors went up 24-14 after a 44-yard field goal from Steve Crenshaw, the longest for the junior from Texarkana, Ark.

The visitors from Jackson, Miss. ran off 14 plays for 60 yards before senior safety Caleb Shannon picked off a ball at the Hendrix eight and ran it back to the endzone. The touchdown was called back to the Warrior 37 yard line after a holding call. Luckily, Hendrix needed just four plays to score. The drive included a 45-yard pass from Peters to junior Ethan Hoppe and a 17-yard touchdown catch by junior Taylor Tibbits.

The Orange & Black defense produced their second consecutive turnover in the redzone when junior corner back Shaquille Grant forced a fumble on the Warrior 10 and sophomore linebacker Jake Brantley recovered.

Two possessions later, Winn scored on a 44-yard run to give Hendrix a 38-14 lead with 11:48 left in the game. Andrew Warren scored from one yard out for Millsaps to cut the deficit to 38-20, but Hendrix rattled off another long drive of 10 plays and 70 yards ended by a Winn three-yard score.

The Majors picked up two more touchdowns late in the game, when backup quarterback Chance Clowers threw to Ty Durham for a nine-yarder, followed by a two-point conversion with 2:32 left. They also scored with four seconds left on Clowers pass to Borne.

Hendrix had 547 total yards of offense and averaged a school-record 7.5 yards per play on 73 plays. Millsaps tallied 599 yards on 86 plays for 7.0 yards per play.
