TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and outgained Defiance College 304 yards to 75 in the first half to earn a 42-7 victory in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football action on Saturday at Cook Stadium.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 35-0 lead just five minutes into the second quarter to move to 6-0 for the first time since 1987.  Junior Austin Swenson finished 13-18 through the air for 186 yards and two touchdowns to lead an offense that crossed 300 yards in the first half.  He also led the rushing attack with 43 yards.

Senior Aaron Abbott added two rushing touchdowns, and sophomore Michael Iacono had one ground score.  Senior Jacob Dye had one touchdown reception, and junior Alec Fisher became Rose-Hulman's school record holder in career touchdown catches with his 25th.

Sophomore Tyler Brutofsky added a defensive touchdown with a 37-yard fumble return early in the second quarter.

Defensively, Rose-Hulman forced three turnovers and held Defiance to under 100 yards in the first half.  The Fightin' Engineers also held the Yellow Jackets to just 2-11 passing for 11 yards on the day.

Mike Henry led the defense with eight tackles, and three players (Kaelen Garner, Cam Hart and Zach Kanz) recorded six tackles each.

Rose-Hulman junior Kyle Brewer recovered a fumble on the Defiance 33-yard line to end the first Yellow Jackets possession, and three players later Abbott scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

The Fightin' Engineers pushed the lead to 14-0 with an 11-play, 89-yard drive.  Fisher set the career touchdown receptions record with a five-yard catch on a pass from Swenson with 7:11 left in the first quarter.

Rose-Hulman's lead reached 21-0 on a seven-play, 52-yard march that ended with 4:20 left in the opening quarter.  Abbott scored on a 20-yard run to cap the scoring drive.

The Engineers enjoyed a six-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run by Iacono at the 14:28 mark of the second quarter, pushing the lead to 28-0.  Brutofsky's 37-yard fumble return increased the margin to 35-0 with still 10:04 left in the first half.

Rose-Hulman added one more touchdown in the opening half, when Swenson and Dye connected on a five-yard scoring pass.  Senior Craig Larew added his sixth extra point of the first half for the final Engineer point.

Defiance snapped Rose-Hulman's shutout bid late in the fourth quarter, when Cody Wilson scampered 32 yards for a touchdown with 2:56 left.

The Fightin' Engineers improved to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in HCAC play with the win.  Rose-Hulman will meet five-time defending conference champion Franklin College (5-2, 5-0 HCAC) in a showdown of the last two undefeated teams in league play next Saturday at Cook Stadium.
