Davis Leads Bears Past Nichols

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore quarterback Adam Davis threw for 301 yards and a pair of touchdowns and senior Joe Rizzardi returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown leading Coast Guard to a 24-6 win over Nichols in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) game.

The Bears, who scored all 24 points in the first half, improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the NEFC while Nichols drops to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Coast Guard will host Western New England next week with first place in the conference on the line. The Golden Bears are 8-0 overall, 5-0 in the NEFC and ranked 1st in New England, kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Davis, filling in for junior Derek Victory, who was injured last week and is out for the rest of the season, was 25 of 46 for 301 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Bears scored on the opening possession of the game as Davis marched the team 80 yards in just seven plays. He hit sophomore tight end Cody Bain with a 44-yard touchdown pass down the sideline with just 1:37 into the game for the 7-0 lead.

Coast Guard missed 35-yard field goal with 2:02 left in the opening quarter, but on the next possession, Rizzardi intercepted Michael McCourt and returned it 52 yards to push the lead to 14-0 with 14:15 left in the first half.



Davis threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to senior Carter Provost with 6:26 left in the first to push the lead to 21-0.

Senior Tyler Henning would add a 32-yard field goal with 27 seconds left in the half for a 24 -0 lead.

Nichols punted on six of its seven first half possessions and also threw the interception. The Bears had 226 yards of total offense in the first half, 196 passing while the Bison had 80 yards in the first half.

The Bison finally got on the board with 6:10 left on a 9-yard touchdown run by senior Andre Rickerson. The two-point pass failed and the score was 24-6.

Senior wide receiver Jordan Groff had a big day for the Bears leading the way with nine receptions for 125 yards while Provost had five catches for 79 yards.

Nichols sophomore quarterback Michael McCourt was 15 of 27 for 75 yards with one interception while leading the way with 27 carries for 84 yards. Junior Grant Klimeck added 18 carries for 56 yards.

Coast Guard finished with 329 total yards, 301 in the air while Nichols had 267 yards, 192 rushing.

Senior linebacker Kyle Wood led the Bears with 11 tackles and a sack while Rizzardi added ten tackles, nine solo, two for loss the interception return for a touchdown as well as a partially blocked punt.

Coast Guard will host Celebrate New London on Saturday when the Bears host Western New England in the NEFC first place showdown, the final home game of the season at 1 p.m.
