Overtime? Kean Has An App (#4) For That

More news about: Kean

UNION, N.J. (11/7/15) – Charles App rushed for a 14-yard walkoff touchdown in overtime as the Kean University football team topped NJAC rival Rowan University 20-17 on Senior Day. The Cougars improved to 6-3 on the year and 5-3 in the NJAC with the victory on Saturday.  Nick Sachs got a paw on the Profs' game-winning field goal attempt with no time left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

The Profs were held to a field goal on the first drive of the extra period. David Coleman Jr. broke up a pass on third down and eight from the 13 yard line, setting up App and the Cougar offense.

The Kean defense was very stingy in the first half. The Cougars held Rowan scoreless, despite having no takeaways. The Profs eked out just 88 total yards in the first period. Coleman led the Cougars with five tackles and Stephan Lewis had another four. Tom Winters had the only sack of the half, and Darin Hungerford had a tackle for a loss as well.

Offensively, Kean had 100 yards of offense in the first quarter but didn't have any points. Five minutes into the second quarter that changed; on second and 12, App lofted a 24-yard pass into the endzone. Tahj Hammary snatched the ball away from two Prof defenders for the touchdown.

Five minutes later, the Cougars capped off an eleven-play, 68-yard drive when Jonathan Schmitt hauled in a seven-yard pass from App and dragged two Rowan defenders to the pylon for the score.

App had 138 yards passing in the first half and led the team with 75 yards on the ground as well. Punter Steve Ferlisi downed a punt on the Prof one-yard line for another Kean first-half highlight.

The Profs took the opening possession of the second half down for a touchdown at the end of an eight-minute drive. On their next drive Rowan converted a 4th-and-16 all the way to the Kean one, then tied the game at 14 on a quarterback plunge by Quincey Lambert.

During the tense endgame, Hungerford had another big play in the fourth quarter; a sack where he blew up the Prof quarterback in the backfield. Winters also had a second-half sack for the Cougars.

After Kean's last dive of regulation, Rowan partially blocked the punt but Ferlisi still got it to go 23 yards to the RU 47. The Prof drive stalled far enough out to make the potential game-winning field goal blockable for Sachs at the end of regulation.

Robert Meade III had 15 tackles to lead Kean, and Coleman (13) and Lewis (11) were also in double figures.Darren Dungee led the Profs with 12 stops.

Schmitt caught a team-high nine passes for the Cougars for 54 yards.

Rowan is also now 6-3 and 5-3 in the league.

The Cougars will wrap up the regular season next week at Montclair State University with a game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
