The victory assured the Wildcats of a return trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs as the NWC's automatic representative.
Playing with the kind of purpose that seemed to be missing in last week's 24-0 win over George Fox, Linfield (8-0, 6-0 NWC) held its third consecutive conference opponent without a touchdown in the Pacific Office Automation Hall of Fame Game. Linfield piled up a season-best 587 yards, including 364 on the ground.
Losing to Linfield for the 26th straight time, Puget Sound (5-4, 4-3 NWC) exceeded last season's lopsided 73-10 margin by six points.
Entering the game in sole possession of second place in the NWC, the Loggers were enjoying a season of resurgence, securing their first winning season since 1996. UPS quarterback Hans Fortune came to McMinnville as the NWC's leading passer, but departed with just 82 yards, two interceptions and a sack. The Linfield defense forced five turnovers and accounted for six sacks on the afternoon, three by reserve end Jake Handran, while limiting the Loggers to 160 total yards.
Payne padded Linfield's early lead with a 74-yard jaunt up the left sideline, making in 17-0 with 8:24 to go in the quarter.
Johnny Carroll made scored on a 1-yard fade pass into the corner of the end zone from Sam Riddle. Metter's extra point made it 24-0.
A sack by Asa Schwartz and fumble recovery by Zach Grate led directly to Carroll's second touchdown catch from Riddle. Two plays after the turnover, Carroll's acrobatic catch pushed Linfield's led to 31-0.
Payne thrilled the Hall of Fame Game crowd with a tackle-breaking touchdown run with 4:50 left in the half.
Riddle tossed his third TD pass of the half with 41 seconds left before intermission, this one a 6-yard toss to Brian Balsiger that stretched the margin to 45-0.
Less than a minute later, Grate recovered another UPS fumble at the Loggers 25. The Wildcats immediately cashed in the Loggers' mistake with Riddle lofting 21 yards into the end zone to Carroll.
Linfield outgained UPS 418-79 during the first two quarters.
Metter added to the Loggers' misery with a pair of field goals from 22 and 39 yards to being the third quarter.
Touchdown runs by backups Tom Knecht and Gabe Caskey extended the bloodbath to 72-0.
The Loggers marched to the Linfield 1 midway through the fourth quarter, but backup quarterback Nik Bernhardt was sacked twice and the Loggers had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Mitchell Habryle.
Payne carried just 11 times but gained 210 rushing yards, 27 away from the Linfield single-game record held by Thomas Ford.
Riddle passed for only 126 yards, but his pinpoint passing inside the red zone kept the Loggers from stacking up to stop the run. All three of Carroll's receptions were for touchdowns. Zach Kuzens had three catches for 64 yards and Eric Igbinoba had three grabs for 67 yards.
Handran, Marcus McGovern and Jake Reimer paved the way on defense with four tackles each.
Peter Bell and Brennan Schon each had six catches for UPS.
'CAT SCRATCH: Saturday's attendance was 1,543. . . Payne's 74-yard run was the longest run of the season by a Linfield back…the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 443-51. . . Linfield surpassed the 50-point barrier for the seventh time in eight games. . . .members of the 1965 Champion Bowl team gathered on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of reaching the NAIA national championship game. . . Linfield went 7-for-7 inside the red zone.
