ROME, Ga. (Sept. 24, 2016) – Ahead by a score of 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Berry scored 34 unanswered points en route to a 41-3 victory over the Sewanee football team, Saturday, at Valhalla Stadium.
The Vikings compiled 477 yards of total offense, which included 183 passing yards by Tate Adcock and 98 more from Slade Dade.
Berry scored first when Adcock found Trey Ciresi for a 41-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. Sewanee answered right back after forcing a Berry fumble. Seven plays later, Michael Jacobs booted a 27-yard field goal to make the score 7-3.
Unfortunately, things went south for the Tigers from there. Berry scored with 10:49 left in the second quarter as tailback Jacob Collins found the end zone from 29 yards out.
A possession later, Ciresi continued to show why he ranks among the top Division III receivers in the nation. On second and 18 from the Sewanee 21, Ciresi caught his second touchdown, this time from Dale.
Overall, Ciresi finished the night with nine catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He has now scored multiple touchdowns in every game this season while having at least 100 yards.
From there, Berry added two Mitchell Blanchard field goals and touchdowns from Josh Bullock and Austin Lowe.
For Sewanee, freshman quarterback Sam Hearn finished with 110 passing yards. Despite 34 rushing attempts and 32 minutes of time of possession, no Tiger running back finished with more than 24 yards. Overall, Berry's defense finished one forced fumble, one interception, and three sacks.
Defensively, safety John Cleveland led the Tigers in tackles with six. Micah Maes, Tristan Fuller, and Jo Jo Matlock each added four stops.
Sewanee continues conference play with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against long-time rival Rhodes next Saturday. After two straight seasons playing in Memphis, Tenn., the battle for the Orgill Trophy returns to historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
