BW Football Team Loses to No.1-Ranked Mt. Union in Berea

Senior Bryon Cook (Tallmadge) caught four passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, but the Baldwin Wallace University football team lost to No.1-ranked University of Mount Union, 49-7, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game   before 7,250 fans on Community & Family Night on Tressel Fieldat The George Finnie Stadium.

The game was tied 7-7 after one quarter. Mt. Union led 21-7 at halftime and 28-7 after three periods. The Raiders outgained BW (1-2, 0-2 OAC) 505-188 to increase its series advantage to 33-21-1 overall.

For his efforts, Cook was named as the 18th Annual Dick Miller Community & Family Night BW Player of the Game.

In addition to Cook for BW on offense, senior quarterback Robbie Plagens (Rocky River) completed 9 of 14 passes for 121 yards with a touchdown and one interception. Sophomore QB Jake Hudson (East Lake, Fla./ East Lake) was 6 of 12 for 77 yards and an interception. The BW defense was led by senior middle linebacker Brian Stepp (North Royalton) with 13 tackles and junior OLB Sam Groff (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley) with 12.

For Mt. Union, freshman QB Luke Poorman played the first half and completed 6 of 11 passes for 74 yards with two TDs and one interception. The running game was led by senior BJ Mitchell who gained a career-high 259 yards on 32 attempts with two TDs. The receiving corps were led by senior WR Tim Kennedy with four catches for 33 yards and a TD. On defense, junior Elijah Berry had six tackles.

In the first period, BW gained a 7-0 lead at 8:47 when Plagens threw a perfect 40-yard scoring toss to Cook, who missed BW's first two games with an injury. Senior Academic All-OAC placekicker Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) booted the PAT. The scoring toss completed a 7-play and 82-yard drive in 2:25. The Raiders came right back to tie it at 7-7 at 6:53 when Mitchell ran three yards to the end zone. Junior PK Alex Louthman added the PAT.

In the second quarter, Mt. Union grabbed a 14-7 lead at 5:58 when Evans-Morris ran three yards for a TD after an interference penalty. Louthman added the PAT.  Poorman gave the Raiders a 21-7 halftime lead when he ran three yards for a TD with 18 seconds left and two plays after a controversial fumble that BW recovered was overturned. Louthman added his third PAT boot.

In the third quarter, Mt. Union increased its advantage to 28-7 at 6:24 when Mitchell ran three yards to the end zone for his second TD of the evening. Louthman added his fourth PAT boot. The scoring drive was 11-plays and 72 yards in 4:23.

In the fourth quarter, Mt. Union's lead grew to 35-7 at 13:53 when Poorman threw a 10-yard scoring strike to senior Tim Kennedy in the left corner of the end zone and Louthman added his fifth PAT boot. The Purple Raiders began pouring it on when Poorman threw a three-yard TD pass to junior Braeden Friss and Louthman added his sixth PAT to make it 42-7 with 11:00 left. Mt. Union scored its final TD with 4:51 left when senior RB Dwayne Aaron scored from three yards out and Louthman tacked on the PAT.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, October 1 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to play the Marietta Pioneers at Don Drumm Field at 1:30 p.m. The next home game is on Saturday, Oct. 15 versus Muskingum University at Finnie Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
