Second-half surge nearly enough for Lewis & Clark in 39-28 loss to Puget Sound

More news about: Lewis and Clark

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers scored two third-quarter touchdowns to stop a big scoring stretch by the Puget Sound Loggers, but it wasn't enough in a 39-28 defeat for the Pios at Baker Stadium on Saturday.

The Pioneers built an 11-point lead a few minutes into the second quarter before Puget Sound scored 30 unanswered points to lead 33-14 halfway through the third quarter.

Carl Appleton, who caught a 13-yard touchdown on Lewis & Clark's third drive of the game, scored his second touchdown with 4:30 left in the third. Appleton, an All-Northwest Conference Second-Team tight end last season, played in his first game since Sept. 17 and hauled in a 17-yard TD pass from Niko Fortino to successfully end a 6-play, 63-yard drive and bring the Pios within 33-21.

Appleton finished with career highs in receptions (8), receiving yards (117) and touchdowns in a game (2).

On the next possession, Dejour Williams caught a 2-yard pass from Fortino to cap off a 9-play, 93-yard drive. Jantzen Shinmoto, who finished with six catches for 88 yards, brought in a 51-yard reception on the drive's fourth play to move the Pios down to the Puget Sound 21-yard line. Shimoto had four catches on the drive.

Puget Sound quarterback Hans Fortune finished with 562 passing yards on 65 pass attempts. He completed 45 passes, had four touchdowns and one interception.

After Williams' touchdown, Puget Sound (3-3; 1-3 Northwest Conference) missed a field goal on its next possession but forced Lewis & Clark to punt on its next drive, the first of the fourth quarter. The Loggers used 3:31 off the clock with an 81-yard drive to score a touchdown by Austin Wagner.

With less than 4:30 remaining, the Pios converted a fourth down when Appleton brought in a 23-yard pass. Fortino picked up another fourth-down conversion on a rush of 11 yards that moved the Pios inside the Puget Sound 30. Dallas Garreaud caught a pass in the end zone with 1:46 left, but the touchdown was negated by a holding call. The drive ended on its 14th play, an incomplete pass from Fortino to Dennis Kamakana. The loss is Lewis & Clark's 29th-in-a-row, a school record.

Lewis & Clark (0-6; 0-4 NWC) did have a 14-3 lead in the second quarter. Following Appleton's 13-yard TD in the second quarter, Lewis & Clark linebacker Tawayne Malone intercepted a third-down pass from Fortune and returned the ball 20 yards to the Puget Sound 10. Fortino threw his second touchdown of the game on the next play, a 10-yard completion to Gage Bumgardner and the Pios led by 11 with 11:45 remaining until halftime.

Malone finished with 16 solo tackles, a career best.

Puget Sound responded with touchdowns on three of its next four possessions. Fortune had 331 first-half passing yards and three touchdowns.

The Pioneers host Willamette on Oct. 29 in the annual Wagon Wheel game, which is also Lewis & Clark's Homecoming game during Homecoming and Family Weekend. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Griswold Stadium.
