Hemphill's Record-Setting Day Helps HSU Retain the Wilford Moore Trophy

More news about: Hardin-Simmons
ABILENE, Texas – Jaquan Hemphill set school records for all-purpose yardage (344) and touchdowns (6) to help the Hardin-Simmons football team retain the Wilford Moore Trophy with a 47-17 win over crosstown rival McMurry at Shelton Stadium on Saturday.

Hemphill ran 26 times for a career-best 172 yards and six touchdowns. He also had six catches for 84 yards and returned three kickoffs for 88 yards. Patrick Baca had the old all-purpose record of 336 yards against Western New Mexico in 1997. His six touchdowns beat Tommy Cupil's old record of five in an epic game against Lambuth in 1994.

HSU forced a punt by McMurry on the opening drive and the Cowboys went on a 17-play, 71-yard drive that last 9:59 but missed a field goal to come away without points and the first quarter was scoreless.

The Cowboys got on the board in the second quarter when Hemphill scored from 5-yards out with 11:28 to play in the half. The PAT was no good and it was 6-0. HSU's defense then forced another three-and-out and the Cowboys went 62 yards in eight plays with Hemphill again scoring from five yards out and HSU led 13-0 with 6:08 to play in the half.

Hemphill set the Cowboys up with good field position with a 38-yard kickoff return to start the second half and he capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run. McMurry answered with a field goal of 40 yards from Tanner Wright.

On the next Cowboy possession, Hemphill scored from 38 yards out and HSU led 26-3 with 4:26 to play in the third quarter. McMurry answered with a touchdown by Wade Barthelemy from one yard out.

Hemphill scored on the first drive of the fourth quarter from seven yards out to give the Cowboys a 33-10 lead and then McMurry was stopped on fourth down and Ryan Breton found Devonte' Walker on a 28-yard touchdown pass on the next play to make it 40-10 with 12:24 to play.

After Kylon Mills intercepted a B.J. Ross pass the Cowboys went 78 yards in seven plays with Hemphill setting the record with his sixth touchdown. Barthelmy scored again after a fumble return by the War Hawks set them up at the Cowboy 6-yard line.

The Cowboys had 586 yards of offense and limited the War Hawks to 230 yards. HSU converted 10-of-13 third downs and had 32 first downs. HSU had 353 yards on the ground in the game.

Breton was his efficient self going 15-of-20 for 208 yards and a touchdown. Cory Ward had 10 tackles to go over 100 on the year with 105. Jordan Washington had 12 tackles for McMurry.

The Cowboys are now 9-1 on the year and 5-1 in conference play. McMurry finishes its season with a 4-5 mark. HSU hopes to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA playoffs. The announcement will be made on Sunday at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
