GENEVA, N.Y. – Homestanding Hobart College used a big second half to rally for a 56-30 non-league football victory over Shenandoah Saturday night at Boswell Field.
Shenandoah (2-1) led 23-21 at the half thanks to a 17-point second quarter, but had no answer for the Hobart (2-1) rushing attack in the second half.
The Statesmen gained all but 55 of their 368 rushing yards in the second half to turn that two-point deficit into the 26-point win.
Hobart, which possessed the ball for just 13:48 in the first half, held the ball for 19:43 in the second (10:05 in the fourth quarter) to keep SU quarterback Hayden Bauserman off the field.
Bauserman, who finished 30-of-45 for 303 yards and four touchdowns against one interception, was held to just 48 yards passing in the second half as the Statesmen largely contained the Hornets offense over the final 30 minutes.
Shenandoah ran 24 offensive plays in the second half, nine of them on 50-yard drive in the third quarter that produced the squad's lone second half touchdown.
The second half was in large contrast to a second quarter in which SU scored 17 unanswered points to take that 23-21 lead into the break.
Bauserman had two of his four TD passes in the second quarter as he directed scoring drives of 14, 10 and seven plays.
"I was very proud of how we responded in the second quarter," Hornets head coach Scott Yoder said of his club rallying from a 21-6 deficit.
"In the second half, the defense got worn down and the offense stalled on a couple of drives."
Hobart wore the SU defense down with that rushing attack; the Statesmen attempted just three passes in the second half and had a 13-play, 70-yard drive that all of the yardage was gained on the ground.
Senior Michael Ashwell broke a program record for receptions in a game with 14 catches for 125 yards. Jalen Hudsonbacked him up with six catches for 108 yards and two TDs – he opened the night's scoring with a 71-yard touchdown reception on an inside screen.
The Hornets are off until traveling to Randolph-Macon on Thursday, September 28 for the ODAC opener. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Notes: Shenandoah wore all white for the second time in program history and now 1-1 in that uniform combo… This was the first-ever matchup for SU versus Hobart in any sport… The game is also the second-ever for the football team in New York state… Shenandoah previously played at Utica College in 2002…
