Hemphill Sets 11 Records As Cowboys Roll

MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons junior running back Jaquan Hemphill ran for a school-record 293 yards and scored eight touchdowns as HSU defeated East Texas Baptist 80-42 in American Southwest Conference action at Ornelas Stadium.

Hemphill had seven rushing touchdowns on runs of (1, 4, 1, 4, 89, 3 and 78 yards) and added a 64-yard touchdown reception. His eight TDs tied the school and ASC record and his 48 points tied the NCAA record of 48. The seven rush TDs was a school and ASC record. His 357 total yards broke his old school record of 342. In all, he broke or tied 11 HSU, ASC and NCAA records.

The game was a battle of unbeatens and the Cowboys exploded for 806 yards and 80 points and ETBU countered with 656 yards.

Hemphill had TD runs of one, four and one yards in the first quarter and HSU led 21-7 after the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the second quarter. Hemphill scored from four yards out and also had a 64-yard reception from Ty Hooper. Devonte Walker also scored on a 23-yard pass from Hooper and the Cowboys led 42-21 at the half.

In the third quarter, Hemphill took the first play from scrimmage and went 89 yards for a score. ETBU then scored back-to-back touchdowns to cut the HSU lead to 49-35 on 20 and 77-yard touchdown passes by Dru Smith.

HSU then put the game away. Hemphill scored from three yards out and then scored an amazing 78-yard run and then Dedrick Strambler had a 15-yard interception return for a TD to make it 70-35. Reese Childress scored on a 9-yard TD pass from Hooper with 11:06 to play and Chance Reneau added a 26-yard field goal to give HSU an 80-35 lead. ETBU added one last score to make it 80-42.

HSU ran for 444 yards in the contest and threw for 362 more. Hooper was 21-of-27 for 362 yards and three scores. Reese Childress had 10 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown. Chris Miller led the defense with 12 tackles.

The Cowboys are 4-0 on the year and 3-0 in ASC play and will return home to play top-ranked Mary Hardin Baylor at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
