Senior running back Brandon Boyd (Gilroy, Calif. / pictured) ran for a career-high 186 yards and sophomore wide receiver Kobe Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions to propel Pacific to a 17-7 win over host Lewis & Clark on Saturday in Portland.
The Boxers (3-2, 3-1 NWC) took advantage of the rainy conditions to outgain the Pioneers, 401 to 227 with a 288 to 154 margin in the ground game. The 186 yards by Boyd are the most by a Boxer since Pacific resumed football in the 2010 campaign. Plus, it is the fourth time and third-straight game that Boyd has rushed for over 100 yards in 2017. His 29 rushes come just one week after he ran the ball 31 times for a career-high against Puget Sound. It is the fourth multi-touchdown game of the career for Williams. Senior punter Ryan Carhart (Roseburg, Ore.) played a key role in the field position game, landing three of his five punts inside the 20-yard line for Pacific.
The Pioneers (2-4, 1-3 NWC) were led by Michael Abraham, who had 19 rushes for 114 yards in the loss. Cale Crawford had a game-high 12 tackles. The 73 yards passing by Lewis & Clark are the fewest by a Pacific opponent since Simon Fraser was held to 52 on Sept. 3, 2011.
Pacific quarterback J.T. Greenough found Williams for a 64-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter to put Pacific ahead 7-0 early. The Pioneers answered with a nine play, 83-yard drive to tie the game at 7 when Dalla Garreaud caught a 10-yard pass from Sawyer May.
With the game tied at 7, late in the second quarter, the Boxers' defense came away with a takeaway. Greenough marched the Boxers down the field on the strength of running by Boyd and freshman Kash Taylor (Hemet, Calif.) before coming away with a 20-yard field goal by senior Alex Beekman(Beaverton, Ore.) to go ahead 10-7.
The Boxers held a three-point lead until they extended the lead to 10 with a season-long 18 play, 71-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Greenough to Williams. In that drive, the Boxers had three key third-down conversions and a fourth down rush by Boyd to extend the drive. To seal the win, the Boxers called on Boyd to melt the clock. He answered with another fourth down rush as well as third down rush.
Next up for Pacific is a contest against Whitworth on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Hanson Stadium at Ledbetter Field with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
