The Pacific football team dropped a 21-10 decision to the University of Dubuque in the home opener on Saturday night.
Pacific (0-2) senior quarterback J.T. Greenough completed 36 of 57 passes for 306 yards and a touchdown in the loss. His two favorite targets were Ty Hargis and Kobe Williams, who had 11 and nine receptions, respectively. Both nearly broke the 100-yard mark, Hargis finished the night with 94 yards and Williams had 98.
Dubuque (1-1) went ahead early when running back Dwayne Allen, Jr. broke through the line for a 74-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. Allen ran the ball 37 times for 228 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
The Spartans remained in front until a 14-play, 82-yard drive early in the second quarter tied the game at 7. In the drive, Greenough completed seven-straight passes to five-different receivers including freshman Ben Rosen, who hauled in a 15-yard touchdown reception to tie the game.
Later in the quarter, Dubuque answered with a nine play, 40-yard drive on the strength of the legs and shoulders of Allen, the Spartans regained the lead. Dubuque quarterback Sean Duffy connected with Emmanuel Jenkins on a 10-yard touchdown pass for a 13-7 lead as the Boxers' Bobby Ulrich blocked the point-after attempt.
Special teams helped Pacific get back on the scoreboard to start the second half. After forcing a fumble on a punt return by the Spartans. Greenough and Hargis moved the ball into the red zone for the Boxers. Pacific cut into the lead when Zack Saros made a 20-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 13-10 with 10:19 left in the third quarter.
The Boxers nearly tied the game at 13, early in the fourth quarter, before a 26-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. Pacific mounted another drive to tie the game before the Spartans forced a Boxer turnover with 6:27 to play
The Spartans capitalized, going six plays and 48 yards for an insurance touchdown as Allen ran it in from six yards for what proved to be the final margin.
Next, the Boxers will continue its three-game homestand as they host Cal Lutheran in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
