WashU Dominates in Second Half at Augustana

Rock Island, Ill., Oct. 27, 2018 – Junior quarterback Johnny Davidson threw for a career-high 483 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Washington University in St. Louis football team to a 38-24 win at Augustana College Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.

WashU outscored Augustana 31-7 in the second half after trailing 17-7 at halftime.

WashU improved to 6-2 and 5-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Augustana fell to 3-5 and 2-5 in the CCIW.

Davidson completed 38-of-49 passes in the win, and eclipsed 4,000 passing yards in his career. He also vaulted into third place all-time on the WashU career list with 4,383 yards.

Davidson was 6-for-6 for 55 yards on the opening drive, and connected with sophomore wide receiver Nick Cione for a six-yard TD pass to make it 7-0.

Augustana answered with a pair of TDs to take a 14-7 lead with 11:36 left in the second quarter. The Vikings drove down deep into WashU territory in the second quarter, but sophomore defensive back JT Streepy picked off QB Zachary Fuller.

The Vikings added a 41-yard field goal with 29 seconds left to make it 17-7 at half.

Davidson was 23-of-31 for 254 yards and TD in the half, but was sacked five times. WashU allowed 284 yards in the first half and recorded a pair of interceptions. 

The Bears scored on their first four possessions of the third quarter to jump in front 31-17. Davidson connected with senior wide receiver Matt Goldberg for an 11-yard TD on the first possession of the third quarter, and then a 23-yard field goal by senior Charles Coccia tied the score at 17-17.

After senior linebacker Jake Coon recorded his second interception of the game, Davidson connected with Cione for a 21-yard TD pass. After another defensive stop, Davidson found Cione open for his third score of the game on a 27-yard reception.

Coon finished with a game-high 16 tackles and a pair of interceptions as the WashU defense recorded a season-high four interceptions. Junior defensive back Justin DiCarlo also added his third interception of the year.

Junior tight end Mitchel Groen had a career-high 11 catches for 143 yards, while Cione recorded eight catches for a career-high 147 yards and three touchdowns. 

WashU travels to Millikin University on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m.
