Pirates Sail Past PLU 56-23

More news about: Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Jaedyn Prewitt threw four first half touchdown passes to lead Whitworth to a 35-3 halftime lead on the way to a 56-23 Northwest Conference football win over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Saturday in the Pine Bowl.

Prewitt completed 23 of 38 passes for 458 yards with those four touchdowns and no interceptions.  The completions, yards and touchdowns are all career highs.

After a slow offensive start, Prewitt and the Pirates got going late in the first quarter.  Prewitt found Ethan Peloquin on a slant and the lanky receiver outran the PLU defense for a 53-yard touchdown to complete a 65-yard drive that took only three plays.

The same pair connected on Whitworth's next possession for a 45-yard touchdown pass on third and 20.

Logan Kitselman completed the Pirates' first drive of the second quarter with a two-yard TD run to cap an 83-yard possession.

Prewitt added two more touchdown passes in the second period, both to Alan Ballew.  The first was a 66-yard catch and run and the second a seven-yard slant with 3:26 left in the half.

Trailing 35-3 at halftime, PLU scored first in the third quarter when Erik Bainter completed a 45-yard touchdown to Cedric Miles to complete a 52-yard drive.  The two-point attempt failed.

The Pirates again in the third quarter to essentially put the game away.  Isaiah Jones ran in from four yards out to complete a 65-yard drive that increased the lead to 42-9.  The possession included a 38-yard pass to Kitselman and a 24-yard pass to Andrew Meredith.

Both teams scored two more times.  PLU sandwiched a 19-yard TD run by Bainter and a five-yard run by Laakea Ane around two Whitworth touchdowns.  Chad Carlson ran in from a yard out for one Pirate score and Kanen Ables threw his first career TD pass, ten yards, to Matthew Fiesta.

Whitworth outgained PLU 509-262, including 484 yards in the air.

Peloquin finished with three receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns.  He concludes the season with seven touchdown catches in only four games.  Meredith caught a career-high nine passes for 137 yards in his final game as a Pirate.  Ballew caught four balls for 108 yards and two scores.

Whitworth's running game was kept in check most of the game.  Chad Carlson led the way with 21 yards on five carries.

Dylan Peterson had two of the Pirates' four sacks, while Bryce Hornbeck and Tiliti Adams had interceptions for the Bucs.

Six different players threw passes for PLU.  Kellan Kranc started at QB and completed 3 of 6 for seven yards.  Bainter took most of the snaps and was 13 of 19 for 145 yards with a TD and an interception.  He also ran for 46 yards and a score.  Alex Rendon was the leading receiver with five catches for 66 yards.

Kalen Davis-White led the PLU defense with seven tackles, including an 11-yard sack.  Regan Divina had the Lutes' only interception.

Whitworth's win was its seventh in a row over PLU, matching the longest winning streak for the Pirates against the Lutes (1959-65).  PLU still leads the all-time series 51-26.
