#22 Brockport Rolls in Season Opener at Framingham

The nationally ranked No. 22 SUNY Brockport football team returned from a 644-day layoff due to COVID and immediately restored to its winning ways as the Golden Eagles defeated host Framingham State 31-0 on the road Saturday afternoon in Massachusetts.  Senior wide receiver Imhotep Cromer caught ten balls for 123 yards and a touchdown, while the Brockport defense caused seven turnovers and pitched a shutout on the afternoon.

Brockport (1-0) has now defeated Framingham in each of their last three meetings and the Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday for their home opener as they host First Responders Day on September 11th against Ithaca at Bob Boozer Field (1 p.m.).  Framingham saw its record fall to 0-1 on the season.

Freshman quarterback Jack Cheshire made an impressive collegiate debut as he completed 23-of-37 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns.  Junior runningback Jala Coad rushed the ball 12 times for 27 yards and scored twice (one rushing, one receiving).

The Brockport defense continued its tradition of dominance, posting their fourth shut out over the course of the last two seasons, including their second straight shut out of Framingham State.   Senior defensive end Josh Greenwood began his All-American campaign with eight tackles, including 2.5 for a loss and one sack.  He also forced one fumble.

The Brockport secondary posted four interceptions, including one which was returned for a touchdown by senior captain Lawrence Jenkins.  Jenkins finished the day with four tackles, one sack and one INT.  Ben Marshall also picked off a pass, as did Alaan Montgomery and Raylens Boutin.

The Brockport defense got out of the gates quick as the Golden Eagles forced and recovered a fumble on the first offensive play from scrimmage.  Cheshire and the Brockport offense followed with a 6-play 32-yard scoring drive, capped by a 16 yard touchdown pass to Cromer to give the Golden Eagles an early 7-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter Jenkins gave the Golden Eagles a 14-0 lead when he returned an interception 18 yards for a score.  Brockport added 10 quick points with less than two minutes to go in the first half to make the score 24-0 heading into the intermission.  Jala Coad punched in a three-yard score on the ground to make it 21-0. Brockport then forced a three-and-out by the Rams and freshman kicker Nate Wigent drilled a 43-yard field goal as the half expired to give Brockport the commanding lead.

Coad added an insurance touchdown for Brockport early in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.  Cheshire found Coad in the flat and he took it five yards in for the touchdown to cap the scoring on the afternoon.

Devin Trent caught four balls for 25 yards on the day and Alex Benson added three catches for 19 yards.  Elijah Aikens made six stops, added a half sack and also recovered a fumble.  Joseph Rodda made six stops and tallied 1.5 tackles for a loss, while senior captain Andrew Covais posted three tackles and one sack. 2019 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year Raylens Boutin broke up two passes on the day and junior linebacker Ben Damiani added three tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss.
