PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior quarterback Nic Visser tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Halls with 14 seconds remaining in the game to lead the Husson University football team to a tense 10-7 victory over Plymouth State at Panther Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Husson evened its record at 1-1 while Plymouth State fell to 0-2.
Despite dominating the game, the Eagles trailed by 7-3 entering the final minutes of the game.
With 1:58 remaining, the Eagles took over at their own 25-yard line. Visser proceeded to team up with Halls on the 75-yard touchdown drive. On the winning drive, he completed four of seven passes for 55 yards, all to Halls, as the Eagles pulled out the victory.
The Eagles' defense had shut out the Panthers until midway through the fourth quarter. With 8:29 remaining, Plymouth State marched 42 yards in seven running plays as senior Manny Sanchez scored on a three-yard run to put the Panthers ahead. Dan Carey's conversion made it a 7-3 lead.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, the Panthers had marched inside the Husson ten-yard line. On a third down play, senior linebacker Kaleb Caron intercepted a Brett Lavanchy third down pass to end the drive. Plymouth State only managed to drive into Husson territory twice during the game.
Midway through the second quarter, the Eagles took a 3-0 lead when a 31-yard pass from Visser to Jon Bell set up a 22-yard field goal by Aaron Paradis. The Eagles threatened to add to their lead in the final minute of the half before the Panthers intercepted a pass.
Led by Tucker Buzzell, the Eagle defense held the Panthers to nine first downs and 176 total yards. Plymouth State ran for 102 yards and passed for 74 yards. Buzzell led Husson with nine tackles. Antwan Turner made six tackles and Caron made five tackles with a sack and an interception.
Visser led Husson by completing 33 of 51 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown. However, he was hurt by three interceptions.
Halls had a big game with 14 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown. Bell had six catches for 80 yards while Aidan Hogan caught six passes for 45 yards.
Shawn Noel led the Eagles' running game with 43 yards on 12 carries, Visser picked up 37 yards on eight carries.
