GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior quarterback and team captain Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg) connected with sophomore wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) for a 52-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining in the game, and sophomore placekicker Palmer Smith (Chesapeake) added the PAT, to give Hampden-Sydney College a 28-27 come-from-behind Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football road win at Guilford College on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina. The visiting Tigers rallied from a 20-7 halftime deficit with three second-half touchdowns en route to winning their second-straight contest while improving to 2-2 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC. The host Quakers dropped their second consecutive decision and are now 1-2 overall, 0-2 in the ODAC.
GC took an early 14-0 advantage in the first quarter, getting a pair of touchdown passes from Bailey Baker to Tre Alexander … the first on a 23-yard play at 13:32 and the second on a 10-yard play at 4:16. Burke Nettles added both PATs for the Quakers.
H-SC got on the scoreboard with just 1:42 left in the quarter when sophomore running back Josh Jones (South Hill) scored on a five-yard touchdown run. Smith added the first of his four PATs—the first of his collegiate career, and the visitors trailed 14-7 after 15 minutes. It was a seven-play, 80-yard drive that included an 18-yard pass from Bernard to Bowling, runs of 10 and 16 yards by senior running back Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount), and an 18-yard run by Jones.
The Quakers got two field goals from Nettles in the second quarter, the first from 30 yards at 12:04 and the second from 38 yards with just 13-seconds left before the intermission for their 20-7 halftime lead.
H-SC had the only score of the third quarter when Bernard found fifth-year slot receiver Nick Kallivokas (Purcellville) for a 52-yard touchdown pass with only 52-seconds left in the quarter to make it a 20-14 contest with 15 minutes remaining. It was a three-play, 65-yard possession that included a 12-yard completion from Bernard to fifth-year tight end and team captain Ed Newman (Farmville).
The Tigers took their first lead of the day with 9:23 left to play when Jones scored his second touchdown of the contest on a four-yard run, making it a 21-20 advantage. It was an eight-play, 76-yard drive that featured a 15-yard pass from Bernard to fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain Dillon Costello (Haymarket), a 14-yard completion from Bernard to Bowling and an 11-yard run by Smith.
GC answered with a 19-play, 81-yard scoring drive that culminated with a nine-yard touchdown run by Paulie Menegay at 3:13, giving the hosts a 27-21 lead late in the contest after the PAT by Nettles.
H-SC, however, responded with its own game-winning possession … going 91 yards on just six plays with Bernard and Bowling teaming for the tying touchdown on the 52-yard pass play at 1:53, and Palmer Smith added the decisive PAT. The drive included a 24-yard completion from Bernard to Bowling, as well, and Bernard kept the drive alive with an 18-yard run on a third-and-10 play.
Bernard passed for 264 yards (16-28) and two touchdowns with two interceptions, adding 55 yards rushing on seven attempts. Jones had 44 yards rushing on nine carries with two touchdowns, adding one reception for 12 yards. Bowling had 108 yards receiving and one touchdown on four receptions, and Kallivokas added 71 yards receiving and one touchdown on two catches. Costello and Newman each had three catches for 35 and 15 yards, respectively. Sophomore wide receiver Brice Wilson (Lovingston) had three kickoff returns for 68 yards, including a long of 31 yards, while classmate and wide receiver Iceysis Lewis (Radiant) had two kickoff returns for 45 yards, including a long of 33 yards. Sophomore punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) punted four times for an average of 35.5 yards, including a long of 46 yards.
Senior linebacker Stephen Cash (Kill Devil Hills, NC) had six tackles, including two for loss, with one sack to lead the defense. Senior linebacker Peyton Carneal (Hayes), junior safety Hunter Spence (Colonial Heights), sophomore cornerback Tobias Lafayette (Charleston, SC), sophomore safety Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) and sophomore safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) each added five tackles … with Spence and Pickren, along with freshman safety AJ Hoggard (Virginia Beach), each adding interceptions.
Baker passed for 268 yards (22-46) and two touchdowns with three interceptions for GC. Joseph Brown Jr. rushed for 51 yards on 12 carries, while Menegay had 25 yards on six carries and one touchdown. Eric Mays had 108 yards receiving on seven receptions for the Quakers, and Alexander added 93 yards receiving on six catches and two touchdowns. Tyrese Pettaway and Ty Walker each had seven tackles.
H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC member Washington and Lee University on Saturday, October 2, at 1 p.m. at Everett Stadium. The Generals are 3-1 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC, after taking a 25-24 road win at No. 16 Randolph-Macon College today. The game will take place during the College's annual Friends and Family Weekend.
