Strong Offense for R-MC Football in ODAC Win at Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – Randolph-Macon amassed 560 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns in a three-minute stretch in a 44-21 ODAC win at Ferrum on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics:

How it Happened:

  • The Panthers missed a field goal on their first possession. The Yellow Jackets moved the ball to the FC22, where senior Chris Vidal (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) hit a 39-yard field goal to give the visitors a 3-0 lead with 8:30 left in the first period.
  • FC answered with a 75-yard TD drive to take a 7-3 lead with 5:47 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Sophomore Brecht Heuchan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) directed a five-play, 65-yard scoring drive, with senior Justin DeLeon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) finding the end zone from 20 yards out as R-MC reclaimed the lead at 10-7 with 3:19 left in the first.
  • Following a Panther punt, the Yellow Jackets moved to the FC 16 and Vidal hit a 33-yard field goal to give R-MC a 13-10 lead 10 seconds into the second period.
  • Following a pair of punts, the Panthers added a touchdown to go up 14-13 with 7:55 remaining until halftime.
  • Junior quarterback Presley Egbers (Clifton, Va./Centreville) would score on an eight-yard TD run to finish a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive as the Yellow Jackets took a 20-14 lead with 2:23 left until intermission.
  • Sophomore Tony Skinner (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and DeLeon scored from two yards out with 59 seconds remaining as R-MC led 27-14 lead at halftime.
  • On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Heuchan hit senior tight end Tim Hanratty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) on a 69-yard TD pass as Hanratty fought his way into the end zone as the Yellow Jackets went up 34-14.
  • Following a punt, R-MC used eight plays toq45qq move 66 yards. Egbers hit senior Joey Hunt (Olney, Md./Sherwood) on an 11-yard touchdown pass as R-MC took a 41-14 lead midway through the third period.
  • Sophomore Owen Arruza (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) snared his second interception of the season and Vidal nailed a career-best 49-yard field goal, matching the school record, as R-MC took a 44-14 lead with 4:49 left in the third quarter.
  • Ferrum would add a touchdown with 10:41 left to make the final 44-21.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC collected 297 yards on 52 rushing attempts. Junior Nick Hale (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) paced the victors with 13 carries for 84 yards. DeLeon had seven rushes for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
  • The Yellow Jackets had 263 yards through the air. Heuchan completed 9 of 12 passes for 185 yards and one score.
  • Hunt had six catches for 59 yards and one TD.
  • Senior Jace DePriest (Sandston, Va./Varina) led the Yellow Jacket defense with five tackles. He had 1.5 quarterback sacks for -9 yards. Arruza and sophomore Torryn Carey-Jarrell (Richmond, Va./Henrico) both had four tackles. Arruza had 1.5 quarterback sacks for -8 yards.
  • R-MC won time of possession, holding the ball for 34:37.

For The Record:

  • R-MC outscored FC 17-0 in the third quarter. For the season, the Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 54-6 in the third period.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won two straight games against Ferrum after the Panthers won the first five meetings in the series.
