Football Rolls to 3-0 as Defense Creates 5 Turnovers

Anderson, IN– Alma College Football was on the road on Saturday to take on Anderson University. The Scots were victorious by a score of 45-7.

The visitors hit the scoreboard early in the first quarter. After the first two drives of the game ended in interceptions, it was a punt by Anderson that gave Alma the ball on their own 18. The Scots would score in just one play after an offsides penalty. Eddie Williams took a handoff and broke a pair of tackles on the way to a massive 77 yard touchdown run to open the scoring.

The Alma defense capitalized on a botched punt and the Scots took over on the Anderson 13-yard line. Once again it was a one play drive with Trent Devereaux hooking up with Nathan Goralski through the air for a touchdown.

After another Anderson punt, it was Devereaux who led Alma on another 6 play 68 yard scoring drive culminating in a 33 yard passing touchdown with Devon Frenchko to put the visitors up 21-0.

Another Scots interception would help to set up Carter St. John to connect with Nate Webb on a 29 yard pass through the air to move the score to 28-0. Alma would strike once more before the half, Devereaux sent a pass to Frenchko just ahead of the break, and the Scots would go into halftime up 35-0.

Things really slowed down for both sides in the second half as defenses adjusted and a back and forth battle ensued. Anderson would get on the board late in the 3rd quarter to put the score at 35-7. Davin Reif and Dominic Overway combined for one more passing touchdown in the 4th quarter, and a Josh Hernandez capped the scoring with a 37 yard field goal bringing the point totals to 45-7 in favor of the Scots at the final whistle.

The Scots put up 490 yards of total offense. Devereaux (5-11, 72 yards, 3 TD, INT) St. John (9-16, 152 yards, TD, INT) and Reif (4-6, 31 yards, TD) combined to lead Alma's air attack. Eddie Williams paced the ground game with 8 rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown. Receiving wise, it was Frenchko who led the visitors with 5 receptions for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Odin Soffredine led Alma defensively with 8 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and a sack. Drew Humm racked up a pair of INTs, with Will Hampton and Brock Beaudrie grabbing an interception as well. Hunter Sanderson and Ryan Olson forced fumbles with the latter recovering his.

Josh Hernandez went 4-4 on extra points with a field goal from 37 yards out. Kaleb Kindsvatter added 2 PATs as well.

The Alma defense was on fire, registering 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, 1 recovered fumble, 3 goal line stands that did not result in points, and just 7 points allowed on the night.

Head Coach Jason Couch was impressed with his squad, "It's great to get a road win. A lot of players got to see the field and they produced a big win. We're excited for homecoming and a packed Bahlke next week."

Alma will be at home next week to host Martin Luther College on homecoming.
