MIT Falls to Salve Regina in NEWMAC Opener, 19-6

More news about: MIT

NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University scored the first 19 points of the game as the host Seahawks cruised to a 19-6 NEWMAC victory over the MIT football team on Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

Salve Regina quarterback Jake Stack (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) finished the game 18-of-24 for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Stack tossed a pair of first quarter scores before scoring on a run in the second quarter. Stack also tossed two interceptions, including a second quarter pass that was picked-off by MIT sophomore Caleb Davis (Houston, Texas).

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Salve Regina 19, MIT 6
  • Records: MIT (2-1 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (2-2 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve Regina opened the scoring on its second possession, a 13 play, 67-yard drive that was capped by Stack completing a 9-yard pass to his left to tight end Max Mazzella (Waterford, CT) at 6:58. The extra point attempt from Chris DiBella (Rocky Hill, CT) was off the mark, giving the Seahawks a 6-0 lead.
  • Salve Regina stalled the next MIT drive after six plays and 26 yards before scoring quickly on the team's next possession. The Seahawks took over on their own 30-yard line. Following a five-yard rush from junior Justan Luzzi (Belleville, N.J.), Stack connected over the middle with junior receiver Andre Sullivan (Beverly, Mass.) for a big 50-yard gain to move the ball to the MIT 15-yard line. Stack then found wide receiver Jacob Perez (Milton, Mass.) for 15 yards over the middle to make the score 12-0 with 3:14 left in the first.
  • Stack pushed the Seahawks advantage to 19-0 with a four-yard rush to the pylon in the second quarter. DiBella's point after was on the mark, making the score 19-0 with 2:48 left before the break. The final Salve Regina score of the half capped off a seven-play, 68 yard drive.
  • MIT got on the board in the third quarter when junior wide out Colin Vollmer (Cleveland, Ohio) hauled in a 28-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Shaunak Joshi (Tampa, Fla.) to cap a five play 80-yard drive with 02:01 left in the quarter. MIT's two-point conversion failed following the touchdown, making the score 19-6.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Seahawks have now won the last six meetings against MIT.
  • Vollmer's touchdown grab was the third of his career but the first since he hauled in a pair of touchdowns during the 2022 season.
  • Joshi's touchdown pass was the first of his MIT career.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT returns home next Saturday, October 5, to host Coast Guard for a 12:00 PM NEWMAC contest. Salve Regina will play at Merchant Marine next Saturday at noon in NEWMAC action.
