Szalkowski Debuts in Record-Breaking Fashion During Pioneers' 49-31 Pummeling of W&J

WASHINGTON, PA - The Pioneers have arrived.

There were many headlines made across the Division III landscape during Saturday's week one slate. However, none might have been louder and more powerful than the headline that the Utica Pioneers produced in their season-opening showdown with reigning PAC Champion Washington & Jefferson. In enemy territory and pitted against a top-tier program in the Presidents, Utica's offense exploded for 593 yards and seven touchdowns as they pummeled the opposition en route to a 49-31 win and a 1-0 start to their 25th anniversary season.

Saturday Spotlight: The season-opening victory was due in large part to a legendary Division III debut by new Pioneer signal-caller Tyler Szalkowski, who piled up an absurd 528 passing yards and tossed four touchdowns, with each score finding the hands of a different receiver. Szalkowski's yardage total shattered the previous single-game school record, beating the previous mark of 467 by a significant margin. The DI transfer completed 28 of his 40 attempts, notching a barrage of explosive plays as he recorded 18.9 yards per completion. He also excelled at spreading the wealth, as three different Utica receivers managed to rack up over 125 receiving yards in the contest. Szalkowski put the nation on notice with this performance, turning in an all-time outing in his first-ever game in the orange and blue

Szalkowski's passing performance was also enhanced by a highly anticipated receiving corps that lived up to the hype and then some, with the trio of Tyshawn Taylor, Antonio Cianfarani, and Bryce Palmer all breaking the 125-yard threshold (Taylor - 151, Cianfarani - 126, Palmer - 126). Additionally, each of those three receivers, alongside Gabriel Zawolo, caught a touchdown in Saturday's game. Taylor and Cianfarani lit up the second level of the Presidents' secondary, with Taylor hauling in an 82-yard pass and Cianfarani catching a 77-yard touchdown just before halftime. Logan Frederick also put together a great outing, hauling in six passes for 73 yards. Collectively, the Pioneer pass catchers had a spectacular day, contributing to the offensive explosion they put forth to open the 25th year of Utica Football.

Overall, the two teams went blow for blow from the opening kickoff, with the President's taking advantage of some miscues to notch an early score before the Pioneers embarked on a 12-play drive of their own to equalize. This would continue until halftime, when the Pioneers made the needed adjustments to halt the hosts' momentum. Coming out of halftime, the Pioneers found the next three touchdowns, pulling away and creating an insurmountable advantage. The Presidents had no answer for the Pioneers' aerial combat, as the visitors continued to utilize the deep ball to great effect. As the game wound down, a few W&J turnovers coupled with a final Pioneer touchdown dealt the finishing blow as Utica's high-tempo helped them secure victory.

1:55 | 49-31 UTC | Eze Frazier - 3-yard run (Nico Duarte XP) - 11 plays, 73 yards (5:46)

Offensive Highlights: Despite the heavy emphasis on passing, Eze Frazier also put in a solid outing during his first game as the lead back for the orange and blue. Frazier picked up 66 yards on 19 attempts, also grabbing the final touchdown of the game to officially seal the deal. He was integral in the final few drives when the Pioneers started to slow down the pace and drain the clock.

Matthew Pallouras was extremely effective in his Raven set debut, grabbing two rushing touchdowns on two different dives from the goal line, including one on fourth down. The backup QB proved his versatility and helped the Pioneers stay unpredictable during the matchup.

A new-look offensive line also performed well, only allowing two sacks during the many dropbacks that led Szalkowski to record his titanic statline.

Defensive Highlights: Some new defensive anchors made their presence felt in Saturday's matchup, most notably linebacker Isaiah Thomas, who exploded onto the scene in a major way during the season-opener. The sophomore star sped all over the field, even drawing many compliments from the broadcasting crew for his ability to appear in unfortunate spots for the opposing offense. Thomas was named the 2024 Utica Football Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, and he displayed exactly what led him to receive that moniker during Saturday's bout as he grabbed a team-high 12 total tackles, one pass breakup, and one fumble recovery that was returned for 31 yards and nearly became a scoop 'n score.

Alongside Thomas, the rest of the Pioneer defense was extremely disruptive, racking up six tackles for loss, two sacks courtesy of Jordyn Davis and Christian Rhone, and seven pass breakups, neutralizing the W&J gameplan from the get-go. It took the heroics of John Peduzzi to really hurt the Utica defense, although his pair of scores came late in the game when the score gap was already sizeable. The constant pressure made opposing quarterback Kellan Stahl very antsy in his first start, giving the Pioneers a defensive edge in what ended up being a high-scoring affair.

To finish things off, Eli Douglas recorded his 9th career interception, adding that to his seven tackles in a pretty complete performance for the stellar safety.

Other notable defensive performances:

Mason Nolan - eight tackles

Michael Mecca - seven tackles

Luke Sheldon - six tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup

Ronaldo Lewis - four tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup

Nick DeForrest - three tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup, one quarterback hurry

Mason Mascari - two tackles, two quarterback hurries

The Third Level: Nico Duarte helped aid the Pioneers in their scoring barrage during his Utica debut, knocking in all seven of his extra points on the afternoon. Devin Taylor also took advantage of his two punting opportunities, sending the ball far with a 46-yard average over his two boots, including a 59-yarder. Zawolo returned five kicks for 75 yards.

Who's Next?: The Pioneers will now gear up for next Saturday's Mastrovito Hyundai Believe Bowl against the RPI Engineers. As of this article's posting, RPI was ahead of WPI 16-3 in their season-opening action.
