Tornados Power Past Tigers for First Win of 2025

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Brevard College football (1-1) used 205 yards on the ground and a strong defensive effort to earn a 26-10 road victory over the University of the South (1-1) on Saturday afternoon in Sewanee, Tennessee.

BC utilized a rushing trio of Jadien Deaton (15 att, 88 yds, TD), Zion Fauntleroy-McDaniel (19 att, 80 yds, TD) and Darrius Billingsley (5 att, 51 yds) to anchor its offensive attack on Saturday. Reserve QB Colson Sigler, a transfer sophomore from York County, Virginia, punched in a TD score on the ground for his first Tornado TD.

Ethan Beamish completed 10 of his 16 pass attempts for 115 yards, targeting Adam Douglas (5 rec, 77 yds) heavily through the air. BC's offense did not turn the ball over once over the duration of Saturday's game.

Defensively, Brandon Broughton led all players with 10 tackles (six solo, four combined) and notched a TFL, one of nine total tackles-for-loss for the Tornados in the contest. Sophomore defensive lineman James Laycock had a breakout performance at Sewanee, registering six tackles, four TFL, and two quarterback sacks. Samuel Grimes and Antonio King each forced fumbles, with King recovering one, while Caleb Melton and Abdulmalik Sholanke each recorded a solo QB sack.

Samuel Vargas turned in a strong day punting the ball, averaging 44.3 yards per punt on six attempts with a long of 60. Appearing in his first collegiate contest, freshman placekicker Hayden Vandegriff nailed a 35-yard field goal and made all three of his extra-point attempts.

The Tigers also featured a strong rushing attack, paced by Cam Beasley, who had 60 yards and a rushing touchdown. John Wolfenbarger made 10 tackles (nine solo), while Balint Rendessy added eight.

Brevard set the tone on its first drive of the ballgame, using eight plays to go down the field 78 yards with Sigler punching in the touchdown from two yards out. Sewanee answered with a 37-yard field goal on their first drive of the contest.

BC forced a turnover-on-downs on Sewanee's next drive, and a nine-play, 54-yard possession was finished by Vandegriff's first collegiate field goal to make the score 10-3 in favor of the Tornados.

Brevard's defense forced a three-and-out by the Tigers, and Deaton capitalized, rushing for 40 yards total on the next drive, capped with a four-yard TD scamper as the Tornados took a 17-3 lead into the half.

Midway through the third quarter, Vargas blasted a 60-yard punt that was spotted at the Tiger one-yard line. Laycock then made a TFL, resulting in a safety with BC extending its lead to 19-3.

With 13:30 left in the game, Billingsley surged for a 30-yard rush that was followed by Fauntleroy-McDaniel's 18-yard scoring run. Sewanee scored a touchdown on its next possession, but the Tornado defense kept the Tigers off the board for the remainder of the game as BC wrapped up its first win of the season.

Brevard returns home next week for its first-ever meeting with NCAA DII Erskine College on Saturday, September 20, at 4 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
