Titans roll in 52-0 shutout over Bison

Westminster College rushed 411 yards and four touchdowns and sophomore Lamont Austin (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) returned an interception 34 yards for a score in a 52-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Bethany Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium.

Westminster, celebrating its annual Hall of Fame Weekend and Family Day event, improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Titans scored touchdowns on six-straight possessions to start the game and took a 49-0 lead into the break. Westminster piled up 380 total yards, including 238 rushing yards, the opening half. The Titans' 411 rushing yards Saturday were the most in game since rushing for 460 yards in a 52-6 victory over visiting Saint Xavier (Ill.) on Sept. 23, 1995.

Junior Clayton Cannon Jr. (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) ran eight times for a career-high 112 yards and a pair of first half touchdowns. He opened the game with a 14-yard scoring run and had a 52-yard touchdown run that extended the Titans' lead to 35-0 two minutes into the second quarter. Graduate student Walt Phillips (Pembroke Pines, Fla., Champagnat Catholic) ran 14 times for 88 yards while senior Demere White (Manalapan, N.J., DePaul Catholic) had 60 yards on six carries. He scored on a one-yard rush with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter to stretch the lead 21-0 before catching a nine-yard touchdown pass from senior Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) four seconds into the second. Senior Nate Wadsworth (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) capped a seven-play, 55-yard drive with 5:40 to go in the second quarter, scoring from a yard out on a direct snap out of the Wildcat formation. It was the first touchdown of his career.

Sophomore Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) finished with three catches for 89 yards, including a 52-yard scoring strike from McGowan with just under 10 minutes to go in the first. It was the third 50-plus yard reception of his career.

McGowan was 7-of-8 passing for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He now ranks ninth all-time in program history in passing yards (3,861) and passing touchdowns (34).

Austin jumped a Trenton Hoffman pass three minutes into the second quarter and returned the interception 34 yards for a score, pushing the Westminster lead to 42-0. It was his first interception of the season and fourth of his career. The interception returned for a score was his first as a Titan. Freshman Gaven Nagy (North Lima, Ohio, South Range) registered six tackles and a tackle for loss. Junior Deshaun McBryde (Apollo, Pa., Kiski) added five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Ricky Cooper (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Port St. Lucie) finished with four tackles and a sack. Junior Dallas Myers (White Plains, Md., Maurice J. McDonough) and freshman Leland Anderson (Butler, Pa., Butler) also added sacks.

The Titans combined for 10.0 tackles loss, including 4.0 sacks, Saturday, while limiting Bethany to 78 total yards. The Titans held the Bison to -1 rushing yard on 30 carries.

Sophomore Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio, Revere) drilled a 31-yard field goal with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter to close out the scoring. He was true on all seven of his extra point attempts.
