The Curry and Coast Guard quarterbacks combined for 13 touchdown passes, Springfield rolled up 70 points and Brockport rallied in the early Week 7 action from Saturday in Division III football.
Curry's Alex Corvese threw for 519 yards and seven touchdowns but he couldn't cap the day off with a two-point conversion to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Derek Victory led his Coast Guard team to the win with six touchdown passes and 525 yards himself on a 32-for-47 day. The performance tied the Division III mark for most touchdown passes in a game, combined, by two quarterbacks.
Darius Adams had 213 yards and three touchdowns on seven receptions, including a 58-yard catch to put the Bears up 15 with 1:47 left to go in the third quarter.
Brockport rode Austin Dean's four and a half sacks and 293 yards of total offense from Joe Germinerio in a 42-28 win vs. Ithaca. The Bombers scored early in the fourth quarter to take a 28-27 lead but Brockport scored the final 15 points for the win. The victory helps Brockport stay one game back of Alfred in the loss column in the Empire 8 standings.
Four Springfield players ran for more than 100 yards and the quartet combined for nine touchdowns as the Pride ran away with a 70-47 win vs. Rochester. Jordan Wilcox had 12 carries for 174 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Jake Eglentine ran for 111 yards and Drew Brown added 109. But the most impressive number might be the 80 yards per carry from Hunter Belzo, who carried just twice, one a 69-yard touchdown and the other a 91-yard scamper for six.
Bethel coach Steve Johnson earned career win No. 200 thanks to a 32-17 home victory over Gustavus Adolphus. The Royals built a 32-3 lead at the half and despite 14 unanswered points by the Gusties in the final 30 minutes, BU coasted to the win. Johnson became the 78th coach among all divisions (12th active) to reach the 200-win plateau, but the 33rd to do it all at one school and the 10th to do it all in Division III. Johnson ranks No. 3 among active NCAA Division III coaches in career wins.
Duke DeGaetano ran for a 10-yard touchdown, his third of the game, with 41 seconds to play to cap a stunning fourth quarter rally for Whitworth in a 45-41 win at Pacific Lutheran. The Pirates (5-1, 3-0 NWC) rallied from a 17-point deficit with just under 12 minutes to play in the game.
Ro Golphin ran for 109 yards, including a touchdown with 10:26 to go in the game, as John Carroll improved to 5-1 with a 20-16 win vs. Ohio Northern. The Blue Streaks picked off Polar Bears quarterback Will Freed three times.
Hamilton came out on top after a wild final seven minutes in which the lead changed hands four times. Kenny Gray scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in the game as the Continentals won 26-25. Bowdoin had taken the lead with 3:01 left as Noah Nelson hit Liam Ford for a 49-yard TD.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps started the season 4-0 but its unbeaten run came back to earth with a thud on Saturday night in a 34-0 loss to Cal Lutheran. Last week's star freshmen running backs were held to a combined 74 yards on 23 carries and CMS quarterbacks were held to 9-for-31 passing. Aaron Lacombe caught seven passes for 142 yards and two TDs for the Kingsmen, who improved to 2-3.
Bryan Hicks threw six touchdown passes as Southwestern scored early and often in a 48-0 win vs. Trinity (Texas). The Pirates held the ball for just 23:32 but limited the Tigers to just 148 yards of total offense on 75 plays.
Frostburg State ran for 259 yards, its most in four seasons, and the Bobcats defeated TCNJ 34-7 to remain in a five-way tie for first place in the NJAC. Christopher Newport remained in that mix as well, defeating Montclair State 28-21 in double overtime, while Wesley rolled past Kean 48-17.
Nick Savant scored three touchdowns and became the first player in Muhlenberg football history to gain 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game as the Mules breezed to a 43-7 home win against Gettysburg. Savant had 28 carries for 114 yards for his fifth consecutive 100-yard game.
St. Scholastica's 35-game Upper Midwest Athletic Conference winning streak went by the wayside on Saturday evening as the Saints dropped a 14-7 decision to Northwestern (Minn.). The Eagles picked off St. Scholastica quarterback Kyle Stepka four times in the win, two of them by Gideon Burnham.
Deshawn Darden threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Delaware Valley downed Wilkes 52-10. The Aggies improved to 5-1, 4-1 in the MAC and a game behind conference-leading Stevenson.
Gallaudet drove 73 yards on 12 plays in just 2:39 and scored with 23 seconds left vs. Mount Ida, but the Mustangs stuffed the Bison's two-point conversion attempt and escaped with a 13-12 win. It didn't help that Gallaudet was called for a delay of game on the conversion attempt and had to attempt to convert from the 8.
Olivet rolled up 343 yards of offense and the defense allowed 8 net rushing yards as the Comets beat Albion 31-14. It's Olivet's first win vs. the Britons since 2007.
